This Excellence Scholarship Campaign is open to students who wish to attend one of the master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering part of the Graduate Initiative EIF "Energy and Industry of the Future".
Competitive funding for PhD scholarships will be available for the top 20% of the students in the program.
Description
These scholarships are intended to train students in the fields of Modelling in Mechanical engineering, Metamaterials, Fluid Mechanics (experiments and numerical simulations) or Biomechanical Engineering. These scholarships are open to foreign students wishing to enroll in the second year of one of the master degree programs in Mechanical Engineering :
- master M2 MAM: Modelling and Applications in Mechanics
- master M2 MFE: Fluid Mechanics and Energetic
and wishing to pursue a research program, during an Internship in a research laboratory, in the field of one of the following research thematics (click on a thematic (on the left) to have more information: contact, laboratory, master program) :
- Thematic 1: dEvelopment of MassivEly paRallel numerical methods for the efficient desiGn of novEl mechaNical meTamaterials (EMERGENT).

The courses are taught in French (the majority of students are french-students) but can be partially taught in English on request as the teachers all speak English. Student mentoring will be set up for students who do not have sufficient proficiency in French.
Scholarship amount
The amount of the scholarship is €1000 per month for 10 months, including an Internship in a research laboratory, totaling €10 000 per year per recipient. Furthermore, no registration fees are required for the selected candidates, as their master's registration fees are covered by this graduate initiative program.
Eligibility criteria
- To be a foreign student, newcomer to a French university and living outside of France at the time of the application (French dual citizenship allowed)
- Having obtained a 1st year of Master degree before 1 September 2025 in the field of Engineering or any fields related to the EIF Graduate Initiative.

Application procedure
- Submissions open: November 26th, 2024
- Deadline for applications: January 31th, 2025
- Each candidate must choose one among the four proposed research thematics, after having discussed with the corresponding supervisor.

- you must fill in the application form (on the left) with an abstract and the 5 required documents with prescribed filename in PDF format only.
- you must also login following the method described here using a valid email address.
The jury will meet the week of February 24th, 2025 and notifications will be issued on the week of March 3rd, 2025, for a start date of the program early September 2025.
Details about the required documents
For your application, you must write an abstract and supply 5 required documents with prescribed filename (in PDF forms)
- The abstract must answer the following points:
- What are your academic interests, and why do you wish to pursue graduate studies in the chosen Master of Engineering?
- What are your scientific interest in the chosen research thematic?
- The name and email address of former or current professors, lecturers, tutors or supervisors who can be contacted as referee.
- A motivation letter named Motivation_{your name}.pdf (2 pages): explaining the applicant’s career goals, how this Master’s program and the proposed research thematic will help the applicant to achieve them and their motivations to join University Claude Bernard Lyon 1. If applicable, provide abstracts of the candidate's previous work (e.g. dissertation, books, internship reports, scientific articles…)
- A proof of higher education diplomas named Diplomas_{your name}.pdf: the diploma must be a Master 1 (180 or 240 ECTS for European students) and transcripts of records from Bachelor’s degree
- A Curriculum Vitae named CV_{your name}.pdf with description of studies (1 page)
- A certificate of English level (TOEFL, IELTS, ECRL), except for English native speakers or Certificate of French level, except for French native speakers, named Certificate_{your name}.pdf
- A copy of an official identity document named Identity_{your name}.pdf
Administrative procedure
We also encourage applicants to apply to the Master degree program via the normal route of application, so that they are also considered for admissions to the program in case their applications to the Excellence Scholarships is not successful. Application to the Excellence Scholarships does not automatically register you for the normal admission to the Master degree program. Therefore, depending on their situation, applicants should also apply to the training program on the dedicated national platforms.
